Dating a Castello pipe is never an easy job! In fact you can exactly read a number stating the year of production, only on smooth pipes (from ‘Castello’ series and up) made after , which is the year of the 40° Anniversary of the factory.
USk Symposium Meet the Correspondent: I don’t feel comfortable when I leave home without a sketchbook and some pens in my bag. I think that my way to put things in my memory is to draw them. And taking pictures isn’t the same thing. I live in a very dynamic surrounding — Israel is a warm country with warm weather and warm people.
Of course, we have seashores, which calm us a little bit. I love to sit in a corner of some Tel-Aviv coffee shop and explore relationships: All this unique local mix of cultures, languages and styles is always a great source for inspiration. You need to be fast, because, as I said, everything is very dynamic.

Ancient fountains[ edit ] Hellenistic fountain head from the Pergamon museum Ancient civilizations built stone basins to capture and hold precious drinking water. The ancient Assyrians constructed a series of basins in the gorge of the Comel River, carved in solid rock, connected by small channels, descending to a stream. The lowest basin was decorated with carved reliefs of two lions. The ancient Greeks used aqueducts and gravity-powered fountains to distribute water.
According to ancient historians, fountains existed in Athens , Corinth , and other ancient Greek cities in the 6th century BC as the terminating points of aqueducts which brought water from springs and rivers into the cities. In the 6th century BC, the Athenian ruler Peisistratos built the main fountain of Athens, the Enneacrounos, in the Agora , or main square.

Photo credit This majestic fountain, known as the “fontanone del Gianicolo”, was created for Pope Paolo V Borghese by Giovanni Fontana and Flaminio Ponzio and completed by Carlo Fontana with the enormous white marble basin. The monumental fountain is characterized by five niches, three big ones and two minor ones, lateral, which receive water from the lake Bracciano. Part of the inscriptions carved over the niches is inexact. It says that the pipes restored were those of the Alseitana, instead of those of Triana.
In , the 40 th anniversary of Castello, a new stamp was introduced on some lines of Castello pipes. This consists of a castle stamping with a number inside the castle. The number signifies a year 40= , 41=, 42=, and so forth.
Carlo Scotti died at the age of 86 in October Thus ten years has passed from it today Nov, Despite of this his signature is still used to certify the fact that the pipe in question is hand made in Cantu, Italy. The signature goes diagonally above the bottom part of the 4,5 cm x 6,5 cm piece of cardboard. Likewise is this very signature stamped on the shank of my first acquired Castello from the valued “Collection” series, which is introduced later at this page.

Pleasant This tobacco was good so good, that it reminded me of a time long ago The Year is June was the rainy season for ‘Nam. I had been given some leave time from my base in Saigon and so I went to explore the City, like usual, my buddies didnt get leave, but I hoped to find some more GI’s in some of the local bars. It was unseasonably dry that day.
It was nice for once to not deal with dagum water in the shoes. I felt good, like it was going to be a swell day; I had every reason to think so.
So, the Castello Philosophy was born. It prefers to be, not to appear, always looking for a perfection that, in the human limits, Castello tries to reach. Carlo’s work-passion continues unaltered under the faithfull guidance of his daughter Savina and Franco Coppo.

Medium to Full Pleasant I received my first tin of this as a Xmas present. The first Xmas I had after meeting my wife she gave me one of this as well as a tin of Irish whisky. Myself being of Scottish descent, and her being of Irish she felt it was somewhat symbolic I think. I thanked her for it and it was appreciated. I came to like it so much it became my daily for about 6 months. When I opened the tin, I was greeted by a wave of heavenly aroma.

Castello Pipes Carlo Scotti, created the Castello pipe in , in a little artisan workshop. His aim was to produce a pipe which was technically and aesthetically at the absolute summit of the quality “parametro”. This quality means many things which are hard to explain. It means working only and exclusively the best briar, that is: Knowing how to work at the right moment, not before or after. Knowing how to work with respect for precise parameters of functionalism, aesthetics and good taste.
Choosing only shops of the highest professional reputation, once the briar has been transformed into a pipe. And many other things. So today the “imagine Castello” has been created as a perfect reflection of what Carlo Scotti set out to do 50 years ago, and that is what Castello pipes are really all about.
